Importance of expiry date

To conquer the Pharma Vision 2020 we have to shift from product to patient. Expiry date is important criteria in that. The expiry date is that point in time when a pharmaceutical product is no longer within acceptable specifications for potency and stability. In determining an expiry date, a range of characteristics of the product are studied over time. One important characteristic is the chemical stability of the active ingredient. Recent survey conducted by our team on the doctors and patients, revealed few important points. Doctors said that they are unhappy about one time print of expiry date on whole strip of tablets or capsules. According to patients they got confusion for identifying the strip after opening six to seven tablets or capsules in the strip in multi drug regimen. To supersede this problem there should be brand name on each and every tablet or capsule. There are some evidences of adverse drug reaction after taking the tablets after expiry date.e.g. tetracycline. To avoid these adverse drug reactions and increasing patient convenience there should be brand name and expiry date on each and every tablet or capsule. The expiry date may be set as a fixed time after manufacture, dispensing or opening of the manufacturer's container. It is good practice not to use drugs past their expiry date.
